Q2:What is the difference between talking with friends and talking with counselors?
Most of us talk with our families or friends about our concerns. In particular, we tend to talk with someone we trust. Well-trained helping professionals not only use theories and skills to complete assessment and treatment, but also follow a Codes of Ethics (see reference), which is the spirit of helping professionals. One of the ethical principles is to maintain confidentiality, which means all information from clients is private. No one else knows your situations other than your counselors, unless you are attempting suicide or hurting someone intentionally. Therefore, we believe well-trained counselors are trustworthy. Besides this, counselors are not like your families or friends who know you well, so they can be more objective about your issues and less likely to judge you. Their purpose as counselors is to help you reach your goals and work in your best interests.
